One of only 109 built, this rally icon proves the collector car market thrives.

The RS1800 is no ordinary Escort. Its Cosworth 1.8-litre BDA engine, with 115 horsepower (tunable to 200+), powers a 900 kg rear-wheel-drive chassis. This giant-slayer dominated 1970s rallies, winning the 1975-76 RAC Rally with drivers like Björn Waldegård. Rarer than many supercars, it’s a Ford enthusiast’s holy grail.

This example, with its original ‘ONO 804P’ plate, was a 1976 Ford press car, later single-family owned for decades, covering 24,000 miles. Twice restored, its Diamond White paint and black vinyl interior surpass factory condition, retaining 5.5x13-inch steels and a manual sunroof. Of 109 RS1800s, fewer than 50 survive, making this pristine car a gem. Bidding soared, rivaling Ferrari 296 GTB prices (£240,000/$307,200 USD).

A homologation special for FIA Group 4, the RS1800’s boxy design with flared arches and a rear spoiler balanced style and function. It’s 0-60 mph in 8.5 seconds shone on rally stages.

Shipped to the US, it joined John Mecom’s stable, tearing through tracks like Sebring and Daytona with icons Roger Penske, Richie Ginther and Augie Pabst. With 6 race wins and 3 podiums, it powered Ferrari’s championship sweeps in 1962, 1963, and 1964, hitting 174 mph and redefining speed.
